Jane Schaller memorial fund
About Jane
Jane Schaller served on the Welch Village Ski Patrol for 16 years from 2001 to 2017. She was very active
in the Western Region as a section chief, OEC IT, OEC instructor, and assisted with the senior program and
many events. She was always quick to help others, often in humble and anonymous ways, and was a
strong leader and friend to many patrollers and partners. Those of us who were fortunate enough to
know and work with Jane knew her as a very talented, gracious, kind, and extraordinary woman.
Jane was born on January 22, 1954 and peacefully passed on Tuesday, March 28, 2017, in
Rochester, MN at the age of 63 after a yearlong battle with Acute Myeloid Leukemia.
Jane fought with strength and dignity and she finished her battle with grace, peace, and hope.

Memorial fund
A memorial fund has been set up for Jane Schaller with the University of Minnesota, which will allow money to be collected in Jane’s name and disbursed specifically toward programs that are meaningful to Jane’s life and passions.
How it works
The goal is to collect $25,000 for an endowment created in Jane’s name at the University of Minnesota that will annually dispense $1,250 to the program of the Schaller family’s choice. This will support the programs that were important to Jane and preserving Jane’s memory and legacy.
In the event that we don’t reach the endowment goal, the fund will remain open for future contributions, accruing value through the University of Minnesota’s endowment investment growth until it does reach the goal of $25,000 or as other contributions are received to push it over the top. If the Schaller family decides not to wait until the entire amount is raised, the account can be released to the program at any time as a single contribution.
Some of the programs the Schaller family could choose (but are not limited to) are:
-
University of Minnesota Rochester Nursing Scholarship Fund: Scholarships for students enrolled in the University of Minnesota Rochester nursing program. An endowed fund in Jane's name can be created for $25,000 in this area.
-
The University of Minnesota Rochester General Scholarship: The Schaller family decides how to have the scholarship established. For example, they could create a scholarship that is open to the entire student body or to specific degree program such as Health Sciences, Health Professions, Medical Laboratory Sciences, and Nursing.
-
The Leukemia Research Fund: To support the Department of Medicine, Division of H.O.T. (Hematology, Oncology and Transplantation) Leukemia and Hematoligic Malignancies research, education and clinical care. An endowed fund in Jane's name can be created for $25,000 in this area.
-
Dr. Gary L. and Nancy J. Grammens Cancer Patient Support Fund: The purpose of the fund is provide a source of patient support at the Masonic Cancer Center, University of Minnesota for emergency financial assistance. This assistance will benefit cancer patients and their immediate families. The financial support may include, but is not limited to, housing costs, partial support for lost wages, support for out-of-pocket drug expenses and co-pays, mortgage/rent/utilities, caregiver support, non-family caregiver expenses, respite services, and childcare costs. An endowed fund in Jane's name can be created for $25,000 in this area and could be specified for patients with Leukemia.
These selections were made based on Jane’s long-time nursing career, being a resident of the city of Rochester, being an employee of the Mayo Clinic, and her courageous battle with cancer. The Schaller family has the ultimate decision on how the funds will be disbursed — programs, research efforts, scholarships, or faculty member’s work.
