Member Application

Thanks for your interest in joining the Welch Village Ski Patrol (WVSP)! As a volunteer organization, WVSP is tasked with providing care to injured skiers and snowboarders at Welch Village. We welcome new candidates to train with our patrol with the hopes of joining as a member of the National Ski Patrol (NSP). Before completing this application, we want you to understand the time commitment that this will require.

NSP training takes most candidates one year to complete, and includes a two-part training before you can become an Alpine Patroller. The first part of training consists of weekly on-the-hill training sessions from December through early-March of the season typically on Tuesday evenings. This training takes skiers/boarders who already possess an intermediate level of skiing or snowboarding and enhances their skills to ensure that all patrollers are capable of riding on any terrain in a wide variety of conditions, and teaches candidates to safely handle a rescue toboggan. Additionally, during this season of training, candidates are expected to sign on to a 4-hour weekly shift (weekdays or weekends available) to gain practical patrol experience and practice training skills. There is no course fee for this training, however candidates must provide their own transportation and equipment.

The second part of training consists of emergency medicine skills. This course involves weekly class sessions held at Welch Village Ski Area from late July through the first week in November plus additional independent course work to prepare for the hands-on class sessions. At the culmination of this training, the candidate's practical skills and knowledge will be assessed to ensure they are capable of providing care to injured guests. This training course and textbook costs approximately $250.

If you are able to meet the commitment but the specific training session days are not feasible, arrangements can be made to complete the standardized NSP trainings at another area.

Upon meeting the training requirements above, candidates will be expected to pay NSP and local dues (approximately $180/year) and furnish a uniform (jacket or vest with universal cross, a vest or pack to carry supplies in, plus black pants and a helmet, as needed) and an initial supplies kit. Patrollers are expected to be a supporting member of a regular 4-hour shift not less than once weekly, and complete annual refresher trainings for both on-the-hill and medical skills.

So why should you go through all of this to join Welch Village Ski Patrol?

  • You can make a difference in people’s lives being on the front lines of safety, helping to reduce accidents, and providing emergency medical care.

  • Our comprehensive training programs will provide you with skills to handle any situation on or off the hill.

  • The opportunity to be a part of a supportive local and national community of like-minded individuals who share your passion for skiing, snowboarding , and helping others.

  • Patrollers have access to certain perks and benefits, such as pro deals on gear and guest passes for friends and family to join you at Welch Village, and more.
